What's the difference between CDs and Certificates?

Certificates, or Share Certificates, are essentially Credit Union lingo for Certificates of Deposit, better known as CDs, offered by banks.

Share Certificates are guaranteed by the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF), while CDs at banks are insured by the FDIC. Either way, your money will stay safe for the life of the account.

Share Certificates are a low-risk form of investment that guarantees an interest rate for the stated term.

All accounts insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). The National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF) protects aggregate savings up to at least $250,000 in your regular Share Savings, Certificates, Checking, and Coverdell ESA accounts.
