EMV Chip Card Technology

This new technology makes an already safe card even safer, and is the most fraud-resistant payment method you can use. The embedded microchip provides increased protection against fraud. Read more below or see the FAQs about Chip Cards page for full details.

What is EMV Chip Technology?
EMV (Europay, MasterCard, Visa) is micro-computer chip technology that is built into your card. This small metallic square feature holds all the card information necessary to process your payment.

Is it secure?
Yes. EMV chip is much more secure than the current mag stripe system. The chip functions as a key carrying security credentials, whereby unauthorized users cannot access the data, thereby preventing skimming and card cloning fraud.

How do chip cards work?
It’s easy to use your chip card to make transactions at the same places you do today. For merchants who have chip-enabled terminals, insert your card and approve your purchase. Otherwise, swipe your card as you normally would.

Making a purchase at a chip-enabled terminal:

Step 1: Insert and leave your card in the chip-enabled terminal.
Step 2: Approve the transaction as you normally do, using either a PIN code or signing the screen.
Step 3: Remove your card once the transaction is complete.

It’s that quick and simple.

Accepted everywhere
Chip-enabled terminals are coming to stores throughout the U.S. as it becomes the new standard. You’ll also be able to use your card when traveling internationally, where EMV has had greater acceptance, in over 130 countries around the world, including Canada, Mexico and the United Kingdom.
