All consumers now eligible for free credit reports

Starting September 1, 2005, the three nationwide credit bureaus - Equifax, Experian and TransUnion - gave all consumers access to free credit reports fulfilling the requirements of the 2003 Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act.

Under FACTA, credit reporting bureaus must make complimentary credit reports available to consumers at their request once a year. Consumers may choose to request their reports from all three bureaus at the same time or make separate requests over the 12-month period. There are no requirements on when consumers need to submit their requests.

Economic Stimulus Checks

The IRS indicated that that it will deliver economic stimulus payments to taxpayers via direct deposit if the taxpayer selected direct deposit to receive their tax refund. If the taxpayer received their tax refund via paper check, then they'll get the economic stimulus payment via check.

Economic stimulus payments will be issued according to the last two-digits of the main filer's Social Security number. People who use direct deposit also will be among the first to receive the payments starting April 28.

It is estimated that next week nearly 7.7 million Americans will receive their tax rebates by direct deposit. The IRS will start mailing checks on May 9 with mailings completed by around July 11.

Because the IRS will use the Social Security number to determine when checks are mailed, taxpayers may receive their checks at different times than their neighbors or other family members. On a jointly filed return, the first Social Security number listed will determine the mail-out time.

Important: Not everyone will get a stimulus package payment. The IRS provides this calculator to taxpayers, which allows the taxpayer to see if they are getting one.

Scholarship Winner

Congratulations to Kristen McBrien, a Freedom member and one of ten $1,000 scholarships awarded by the MD DC Credit Union Foundation essay contest. Kristen is a C. Milton Wright senior who is attending the University of Delaware in the fall. Her essay earned a perfect score of 20 points out of a possible 20 points.

Other Freedom members who entered the essay contest and are being recognized by Freedom with a $500 gift towards their college expenses are Joshua Lemly of Darlington, who attends Harford Community College and Towson University and Henry M. Basta Jr. of Abingdon who is attending Harford Community College.
